Imladris

Imladris is a valley by the river Bruinen between the Misty Mountains. Men called it Rivendell. Though often referred to as 'Elrond's House' or 'The Last Homely House' it actually was more like a settlement for both, Noldor and Sindar Elves. It was also established to receive many guests.
Elrond himself had founded Imladris as a stronghold in the war for Eregion in the year 1697 of the Second Age. When Sauron was banished from the lands, it was decided to keep the valley. Elrond, now vice-ruler of Eriador, was able to easily defend his new home with the powers of the Elvenring Vilya.
In Imladris the heirs of the Kings of the Dúnedain were raised and the shards of Narsil were waiting here to be forged anew. Councils of the wise were held here and many adventurers found some badly needed rest in the peaceful valley.
Elrond received word from all lands, because he entertained many contacts. This is why almost every free race of Middle-Earth was represented in the Ringcouncil.
Even when Elrond had sailed to Valinor at the End of the Third Age, Imladris did not lose its splendor immediately, for his sons Elladan and Elrohir stayed here a while longer together with their grandfather Celeborn.
