Glorfindel

Glorfindel (="Goldenhaired Elf")
An elf from Imladris, supposedly a Noldor.
In 1975 of the Third Age Glorfindel led an army from Imladris to help Earnur driving away the Witchking from the north. On this occasion he prophecied that said Witchking wouldn't be killed by a man (which proved to be true).
When Frodo was hurt by the blade of the Nazgūl, Glorfindel found him and his party and lent him his white horse Asfaloth so he could safely reach Imladris.
Fans like to believe Glorfindel identical with the heroic balrog-slayer of the First Age, who had the same name. Actually, Tolkien seems to have confirmed these suspicions in one of his last private letters -but it's not official.
